Dear District Resident:
Hello, my name is Pete Ross. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to inform you of my candidacy in the 2014 Democratic Primary for the Office of Shadow US Senator, representing the District of Columbia. I am running because I believe that residents of the nation’s capital deserve full representation in their national legislature, the same rights that residents of capital regions around the world enjoy.
On March 29, 1961, the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution was ratified by the States, granting the residents of the District of Columbia the right, for the first time, to cast their ballots in US Presidential elections. Despite this victory more than 52 years ago, District residents still do not enjoy the same benefits of Congressional voting representation and autonomy that are afforded to every American elsewhere, including those stationed abroad.
After serving our country as a Captain in the United States Army, I have had the privilege of living in the District of Columbia for over 37 years and raising five sons with my wife, Marsha. I believe with every fiber of my being that full voting rights and autonomy for the District’s 630,000 residents are long overdue.
I am seeking this office in order to serve the residents of the District of Columbia, not to have the office serve my needs.
I intend to bring true leadership, a new enthusiasm and renewed momentum and collaboration to the struggle for full voting representation for DC residents through EDUCATION, AGITATION, COLLABORATION and NEGOTIATION.
In the coming weeks and months, I will be campaigning across our great city, and I look forward to the opportunity to engage District residents in the struggle for full equality. These well-deserved rights will not be gained by the actions of a few, but by sweat and toil of many. I ask you to join me in forging A NEW SPIRIT,
A NEW ACTIVISM, and A NEW WAY FORWARD.
